What Does It Mean If the Light on My SmogHog Air Cleaner Is Off?
Electrostatic air cleaners such as SmogHog® and MistBuster® are commonly used in manufacturing facilities to collect oil smoke, coolant mist, and other airborne contaminants.
The indicator light is an important troubleshooting tool because it provides information about whether the high-voltage portion of the air cleaner is operating normally.
But what does it mean when the indicator light is completely off?
There are several possible causes, ranging from a loss of incoming power to a problem with the power supply, collection cells, ionizers, or even the indicator light itself.
1. There Is No Power to the Air Cleaner
The simplest explanation is that the air cleaner is not receiving power.
Possible causes include:
- A tripped circuit breaker
- A blown fuse
- A disconnected power supply
- A loose electrical connection
- A problem with a machine interlock
Some mist collectors are wired directly into the CNC machine or other equipment they are collecting contaminants from. In these situations, the air cleaner may depend on the machine’s controls or electrical system to provide power.
What to Check
First, determine whether the air cleaner is receiving power.
Check the appropriate circuit breaker, disconnect, and controls. If a fuse has blown or a breaker has tripped, do not simply replace or reset it repeatedly without determining why the problem occurred.
If the air cleaner is interlocked with a CNC machine, the machine’s control panel and electrical system may also need to be inspected.
Electrical troubleshooting should be performed by qualified personnel following the appropriate lockout/tagout procedures.
2. The High-Voltage Power Supply Has Failed
If the air cleaner is receiving the correct incoming power but the indicator light remains off, the high-voltage power supply may be malfunctioning.
The power supply provides the high voltage needed by the ionizers and collection cells. A failed or weak power supply can prevent the electrostatic portion of the air cleaner from operating correctly.
The required output voltage varies depending on the manufacturer and model. Proper testing of high-voltage outputs should be performed by a qualified technician using the appropriate high-voltage test equipment.
If the power supply is determined to be defective, it should be replaced with the correct unit for the specific air cleaner.
3. There Is a Short in the Collection Cell or Ionizer
- Have broken ionizer wires pieces stuck in the filter.
- Contaminated or damaged insulators
One useful diagnostic clue is whether the indicator light behaves differently when the electrostatic components are removed from the unit. If the light operates without the collection cells or ionizers installed but goes out when they are reinstalled, the problem may be within one of those components.
Common Problems to Look For
Dirty collection cells: Heavy contamination can create an electrical path between high-voltage and grounded components.
Metal chips or swarf: Small conductive pieces can become lodged inside collection cells and create a short.
Broken ionizer wires: A broken or loose wire can come into contact with other components and cause an electrical fault.
Damaged insulators: Cracked, dirty, or carbon-tracked insulators can also contribute to electrical shorts.
Collection cells and ionizers should be thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and repaired as necessary before being returned to service.
- The Indicator Light Itself Has Failed
Sometimes the air cleaner is working properly and the indicator light is simply defective.
If the system is receiving the correct power and the electrostatic components are operating normally, but the indicator light remains off, the indicator light or its associated circuit may need to be replaced.
This is one reason the indicator light should not be used as the only indication that an air cleaner is operating correctly. Proper airflow and overall system performance should also be evaluated.
What If the Indicator Light Is Flashing Instead?
A completely off indicator light and a flashing indicator light can indicate different problems.
A flashing light is often associated with intermittent arcing or a partial short in the electrostatic components.
Common causes include:
- Dirty collection cells
- Broken ionizer wires
- Damaged insulators
- Dirty contact boards
- Excessive contamination
- Power supply problems
If your indicator light is flashing rather than completely off, the troubleshooting process may be different.
Preventative Maintenance Helps Prevent Conditions that Cause the Indicator to Turn Off
A short within the electrostatic components can also cause the indicator light to go out.
Regular maintenance is one of the best ways to reduce electrical problems with electrostatic air cleaners.
A preventative maintenance program should include:
Regular Inspections
Inspect collection cells, ionizers, insulators, contact boards, motors, blowers, and other components for contamination or damage.
Scheduled Cleaning
Dirty collection cells and ionizers are one of the most common causes of electrical problems. Keeping them clean helps maintain collection efficiency and reduces the possibility of arcing.
Electrical Inspection
Electrical components should be inspected regularly for signs of wear, overheating, contamination, or damage.
Professional Service
Electrostatic air cleaners use high-voltage electrical systems. When troubleshooting requires access to energized high-voltage components, use a qualified technician with the appropriate training and test equipment.
Regular professional maintenance can identify problems before they become expensive failures.
Need Help With Your Electrostatic Air Cleaner?
An indicator light that is off does not necessarily mean that the entire air cleaner has failed. The cause could be as simple as a loss of incoming power, or it could involve the power supply, collection cells, ionizers, or indicator circuit.
