How and Why Machines Experience Poor Air Quality-Related Downtime
Poor air quality has diverse and far-reaching effects on the overall effectiveness of a machine shop. While the mental and physical effects on employees are of utmost importance, many people do not realize that poor air quality can negatively impact the operation of high-precision CNC machines.
- Dust and Particulate Contamination: CNC machines operate with high precision, and even tiny particles of dust or contaminants in the air can cause problems. When dust or particles settle on critical machine components, such as bearings, rails, or lead screws, they can interfere with smooth movement and accuracy. Over time, this can lead to increased wear and tear, decreased machine performance, and, eventually, the need for maintenance or repairs.
- Cooling and Lubrication System Issues: Poor air quality can negatively impact a CNC machine’s cooling and lubrication systems. Airborne contaminants can clog cooling fins and filters, causing the machine to overheat. Additionally, they can contaminate lubrication systems, leading to increased friction and wear on moving parts.
- Electrical Components and Wiring: Airborne contaminants can accumulate on electrical components, connectors, and wiring within the CNC machine. Over time, this can lead to electrical issues, including short circuits and connection problems, disrupting the machine’s operation.
- GFI-Protected CNC Machines: Some CNC machines are protected by GFI (ground fault interrupters) if the air filtration system is dirty or malfunctioning, it can produce a ground fault that shuts the machine down.
Another advantage of having source capture air filtration installed on precision CNC machines is that it can increase accuracy because the constant airflow prevents ambient temperatures in the machine from getting high enough to affect the accuracy of machined parts due to thermal expansion.
