How Do I Know When My Electrostatic Air Cleaner Needs Cleaning?
The wrong way to tell if your SmogHog®, MistBuster®, Tri-Mist®, Smokeeter®, or other electrostatic air cleaner (EAC) needs cleaning is to look for smoke or oil mist blowing through the unit. By the time you notice a visible plume, the unit is already overdue for maintenance. The air may become hazy, operators may notice poor air quality, and contaminants can begin building up throughout the facility.
Unlike other filters, electrostatic air cleaners don’t plug up as much as they get dirty. They capture extremely small airborne particles with an electrostatic charge instead of capturing them in a bank of filters. The particles are so small they are invisible to the naked eye, which is why regular inspections are important—even if the air looks clean.
So, how can you tell when it’s time to clean your EAC?
There are a few simple things to check:
Pull out the collection cell.
Dirt and contaminants build up on the leading edge (air inlet side) first, then move farther back through the cell. Clean the cells before they become completely loaded—ideally when the buildup reaches about 75% in double-pass SmogHog® systems.
Inspect the ionizer.
Check the ionizer wires or discharge spikes for buildup. Dirty wires cannot properly charge smoke or oil mist particles, reducing collection efficiency. Also, inspect the high-voltage insulators, as heavy buildup can reduce system performance.
Check the after-filter.
Most electrostatic air cleaners have a 1-inch aluminum mesh after-filter. If it is collecting noticeable smoke or oil mist, it’s usually time to clean the collection cells.
Watch the power indicator light.
Most SmogHog®, MistBuster®, and Tri-Mist® units have a high-voltage indicator light. If the light flickers or goes out, the unit should be serviced immediately.
Inspect the pre-filter.
The pre-filter captures larger particles before they reach the ionizer. If you can still see light through it, airflow is usually acceptable. Heavy dust applications may require more frequent cleaning.
For air cleaners with double or triple pass filtration, cleaning the first pass more often can help extend the second pass’s life and keep from damaging the first pass from overloading.
