One of the most common questions we hear at Bee Clean Specialties is, “How do electrostatic air cleaners work?”

The technology can get fairly technical, so we like to explain it using a simple balloon demonstration. Most people are familiar with rubbing a balloon on their hair and then watching it stick to a wall. This is the same basic principle that electrostatic air cleaners use to remove smoke, oil mist, and other airborne contaminants.

In this demonstration, your hair acts as the ionizer, providing the static electricity needed to charge the balloon. In an electrostatic air cleaner, the ionizer operates at approximately 10,000 volts, giving airborne particles an electrical charge as they pass through the ionizer section.

Once the balloon has been charged, it’s attracted to and sticks to the wall. The wall represents the collection cell inside the air cleaner. The collection cell contains alternating high-voltage and grounded plates. In our demonstration, the arms act as the high-voltage plates, helping pull the charged “balloon” toward the wall, just as an electrostatic air cleaner pulls charged smoke or oil mist particles onto the collection plates.

This process is extremely efficient and allows electrostatic air cleaners to capture particles of many different sizes, as long as they receive an electrical charge.

When there are too many balloons passing through at once, not every balloon receives a charge. This is why double-pass systems, such as those found on many SmogHog® and MistBuster® units, are beneficial in heavy smoke applications. The second pass gives additional particles another opportunity to become charged and collected.

Eventually, the wall becomes covered with balloons and can no longer collect additional ones. The same thing happens inside an electrostatic air cleaner. As contaminants build up on the collection cells, cleaning is required to maintain peak performance and prevent smoke or oil mist from blowing through the unit.

If the power supply stops providing voltage to the ionizer, the particles will not receive a charge and cannot be collected by the collection cell. Regular maintenance helps ensure your system continues operating at peak efficiency.
