Before choosing a filter media, there are a few important factors to understand. A MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to measure a filter’s ability to capture airborne particles. MERV ratings typically range from 1 to 16, with higher ratings indicating greater filtration efficiency.
However, efficiency is not the only factor to consider. The application, type of contaminant, operating environment, and cleaning method all play an important role in determining the best media choice.

Spunbonded Polyester
Spunbonded polyester media filters are made from 100% polyester fibers and typically have a MERV rating between 10 and 11.

Because of their durability, spunbonded polyester filters can perform well in demanding environments. However, their overall lifespan depends on the application, contaminant type, and cleaning process used.
Nanofiber
Nanofiber media consists of a thin layer of synthetic nanofibers applied to a filter substrate. These filters typically have a higher MERV rating, ranging from 13 to 15.
The nanofiber layer helps capture smaller, submicron particles before they reach the filter substrate. This protects the underlying material and can extend filter life while maintaining strong filtration performance.
Nanofiber media offers an excellent balance between efficiency, service life, and operating cost, making it a popular choice for many industrial applications.
ePTFE Membrane
ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane filters are another type of surface-loading media. These filters are typically applied to a polyester substrate and can achieve a MERV rating of 16.
The durable construction of ePTFE provides excellent resistance to abrasion and moisture, often outperforming nanofiber media in harsh operating environments.
Because of the higher material cost, ePTFE membrane filters are typically reserved for applications where maximum filtration efficiency and durability are required.
